GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – Two big high school league games were played tonight on the Western Slope on the baseball diamond and soccer pitch. Montrose traveled to Sprizzio Field to take on the Fruita Monument Wildcats, the defending Southwestern League champions. Additionally, cross-town rivals Central and Junction clashed on the pitch at Unity Field.
We start with a game between Fruita and Montrose. After two scoreless innings, the Wildcats' bats caught fire. Lucas Weaver scored the first RBI of the game with a double that brought in teammate Parker Noah. Then Smolinski of Hunter (Scuba) entered the box and hit Weaver, giving Fruita a 2-0 lead. Montrose hit two runs of his own in the top of the fourth inning, tying the game at two runs each. Fruita left his mark on this game in the second half of the inning. The Wildcats' offense scored seven points in the bottom of the fourth inning, taking a commanding 9-2 lead. Fruita then added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, defeating the Red Hawks 12-2 in the final and extending their winning streak to three games.
Now, on to the showdown between Central and Junction in the Women's Soccer League. This match can best be described as a defensive battle on both sides. In the 11th minute of the first half, Keiona Sanders sent a cross into the box from a corner kick, and Sedna Czarnecki caught the ball and shot it into the back of the goal. Junction entered halftime with a 1-0 lead. Both teams had chances in the second half, with Junction finding the back of the net after breaking through, but with five minutes left in the game, Lauryn Spencer came close to taking a free kick and the ball narrowly missed the top corner of the goal. Crossbar. The Tigers won their second win of the season with a 1-0 final victory.
