HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — Former Detroit Lions player Cameron Sutton turned himself in to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office on Easter Sunday.
At 8:24 p.m., the NFL player arrived at Orient Road Jail to turn himself in because he was wanted as a domestic offender for strangulation.
Deputies responded to a request on March 7 to search a woman who had allegedly been beaten at Lutz's home in Sutton. Authorities have not been able to locate the football player since that incident.
The Detroit Lions announced that Sutton was released on March 21 after an order for his arrest was issued.
“We were made aware this morning of the ongoing legal situation regarding Cam Sutton,” Lyons told WFLA in a statement. “We will continue to monitor the situation and will not be making any further comment at this time.”
On March 25, his attorney told the Sheriff's Office Warrants Division that Sutton was traveling to Tampa to turn himself in.
“After weeks on the run from law enforcement, this man finally made the right choice by turning himself in,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. “Domestic violence has no place in our community and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County. My thoughts are with her as she continues to recover from this man's gruesome actions. My thoughts are with women.”
The Lions signed Sutton to a three-year, $33 million contract a little more than a year ago. Sutton started 31 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2021-2022 season, recording five interceptions and 95 tackles. The Steelers drafted the Jonesboro, Ga., former University of Tennessee star in the third round in 2017.
