Editor's note: The Kansas Jayhawks have opened fall camp with a ton of notes and interviews from players and coaches. Over the next few days, we'll be looking back at the biggest news and quotes from each day of spring practice.
The first day of spring practice for the Kansas Jayhawks was a great opportunity to watch head coach Lance Leipold and his players return to practice for next season. Here are some important notes:
Leipold particularly emphasized the physicality of last season and how that can carry over into the spring.
“Especially getting everyone on the offensive end to have the ball. I want Jeff to be grounded as coordinator and adapt the way we do things. Like I said before, we want the terminology and systems to be the same as much as possible. We're going to keep it that way, so Jeff somehow learns what he can do at the same time. He gave his stamp of approval for this crime.”
He also talked about defense.
“Defensively, we acquired DK, who has been a great addition. I'm very excited to see what he brings to our secondary and our entire defense.”
Leipold also talked about some of the key players and made some important notes.
“Jaylon had some work to do today. I thought Cole did a very good job. There was some class conflict and Devin Neal is going to miss a significant amount of practice time.”
Jaron Daniels missed most of Kansas' games last season and was the center of attention at practice.
“He's done some. I'm really happy with the way he's throwing. We're going to continue to do that every day, but he was definitely getting his reps here.
Isaiah Marshall is another important player to keep an eye on as he is a quarterback signee from Michigan State.
“A lot of those guys are still in high school and they're probably wondering who they're going to ask to prom, but they're out here playing, and you know we're fast at 11-on-11. Very pleased. You know Isaiah is still the same, even if he plays great, even if he throws an interception. We need to see someone with that composer, and today he I think I showed that.”
Coach Matt Greidersleeve also spoke to the media.
“It really was the most productive offseason ever since Coach and I have been here.”
He talked about leadership.
“Leading by example. We think about breathing in this program. If you don't do things the right way, that's the basis of leadership, and we don't consider that leadership to be good teammates.” yeah.”
“If there's one thing I'm most pleased with, it's the attitude,” Coach Greidersleeve said. He also said, “Early in my career, as a head strength coach, I remember having an 8-9 week offseason, but I always remember around week 6 when everyone started getting tired of lifting and I… “It was around that time that I got tired of hearing him bark,” he added. It's always been a cat-and-mouse game where they let them come out and then let's get through the rest of the offseason and then go play football. I didn't really feel this off-season until the day I left for spring break. As the players were popping out that morning, they came in and I had to reel them back in because they were like little squirrels, but I reached out to God, um. I can say that before 7 weeks and 4 days of training there was not a single day. Today I noticed that there was an atmosphere of let's just get through it. Every day they competed. I'm excited about what we've been able to accomplish over the last eight weeks, but I think a big part of it for me is laying the foundation for what we can do the rest of this offseason. ”
“Kobe Bryant had the best offseason ever here. And I'm not just talking about it from a physical standpoint, but the way and the level that he put into his diet and nutrition and the competition. It means how.”
He goes on to say: “We develop you from the moment you join this program to the day you leave the program and to be honest with you.”
Speaking of Kobe Bryant. He also spoke to the media.
I was asked what was the best part of training. “It's one-on-one and competition. I just met some new students. It's amazing to see how they grow as people.”
