SALISBURY โ Salisbury senior Dashawn Brown's only touchdown catch of the 2023 season was canceled by a flag, but some believe the 6-foot-3, 220-pounder can be a great tight end in college. There are quite a lot of them.
“He runs good routes and has a great arm,” Salisbury head coach Clayton Tribbett said. He frequently called Brown's number on two-point conversion plays.
Brown made the most of those opportunities. He had five two-point catches as a senior.
Best known for his work at defensive end for the Hornets, Brown signed with Livingston College at the position where he earned All-Conference and All-County honors with 5.5 sacks, six tackles for loss, and 27 rushing tackles.
“I wanted to be close to home, but I wasn't ready to go to school somewhere,” Brown said. โAnd Livingston keeps quite a few of us in his home.โ
Jimicah Wells, who broke the rushing record in Salisbury in 2022, got quite a few carries for the Blue Bears last season. Salisbury senior defensive back Tyree Brown is also part of Livingston's 2024 recruiting class.
Although that was the one game Salisbury lost, Brown believes his senior year's best game was against Shelby.
“Maybe I shouldn't say it was great because we lost, but that team was the toughest team we ever played. They made sacks and deflected passes,” Brown said. โAgainst Shelby, we had to give it our all on every snap.โ
Few people call Brown by his first name. To his coaches and teammates, he is widely known as “Fats.” It's a nickname that dates back to his early days.
“Well, I was this big, fat baby,” Brown explained with a laugh.
The fat baby has lost weight, grown taller, and become quite an athlete. He was actually a quarterback at Knox Middle School, but when he got to high school he kept getting bigger and was moved to defensive end for the Hornets as they let Mike Getter take the snaps.
Although Brown was sidelined for some time with a dislocated shoulder, he was one of the core players on Salisbury University's basketball team, which finished with a 27-4 record, along with many other athletes who helped the football team go 12-1. He became a person. The class of 2024 has amassed many wins and championships.
โPlaying basketball has always helped me in football as well,โ Brown said. โI got used to moving my feet and playing with energy.โ
Brown's career goal is to become a contractor. He plans to major in business and finance at Livingston.
But even though he's in a position with limited experience, he still has a lot of football left in him.
โHeโs always been a vocal leader for us and a great young man,โ Tribbett said. “Livingston definitely recruited him as a tight end. He's athletic and can line up well or spread out. And he has a knack for going up and getting the ball 50-50. Not all athletes can do that.โ
