The Florida State Seminoles are in the middle of spring practice in Tallahassee. The present and the future collided last week when new students got a chance to visit campus and get a feel for what it's really like to be a Seminole.
As part of FSU's Legacy Recruiting Weekend, prospects were able to talk with former Florida State greats about how they built their legacies in Tallahassee. One of those players is four-star running back Byron Lewis. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound prospect from American Heritage had a lot to say after his visit about the people he was able to talk to and the coaching philosophy that a guy like Mike Norvell brings.
“I talked to a lot of former players, I talked to running back (Warrick Dunn) who is a great guy and has great wisdom. It was really amazing how he just kept his head down and kept working despite being ignored like that, and he just proved all the doubters wrong.”
Louis added that his experience over the weekend was also highlighted by the people behind the scenes. Florida State has one of the best resumes in the nation, but it's the people who make this program work.
“I mean, it's the people here. It's not necessarily the facilities and all the rings and all the championships, but what they're building on and how Coach Nobel practices. The people here are really great.”
Since Norvell took over as head coach of the Seminoles, former players have talked about how their time at Florida State made them the best versions of themselves. With star players like Jared Verse, Jermaine Johnson, and Jordan Travis all finding success with FSU, there's no question the program has once again become a destination for freshmen.
That being said, players past and present have emphasized time and time again that FSU is not for everyone and that you must always play at the top of your game to wear the garnet and gold on game day. doing.
“What impresses me about Florida State is, sure, you expect them to come to you, but to be honest, you have to want to be here. You have to want to be coached by these coaches, you have to want to learn, you have to want to be a team player, you have to want to be the best version of yourself,” Lewis said. “Look, Coach Norvell always says, if you don’t want to be the best yourself, if you don’t want to be the best teammate, if you don’t want to be the best person, if you don’t want to be the best son, then you don’t want to be the best. Then you’re not going to be the best son you can be.’ Then don’t come here. It's a very important thing because not everyone can come here, not everyone can be invited here, not everyone can wear garnet and gold. I feel like that. ”
Louis added that he plans to take an official visit to FSU by the fall and will announce a complete list of official visits in the near future. He added that his own commitments will be made after completing all official visits and can be expected in mid-autumn. Louis said he plans to enroll early with whatever program he signs with.
The Florida native is considered the Sunshine State's No. 198 overall prospect, No. 14 running back and No. 29 recruit in the 2025 class, according to 247Sports.
