baltimore – UMBC Head Men's Soccer Coach anthony adams announced that associate head coach Brian Rowland '03 has accepted an assistant coaching position at the University of Maryland.
Rowland joined his alma mater's staff this fall after serving as head coach at Temple University from 2017 to 2022. The Retriever Hall of Famer (inducted in 2014) spent the previous eight seasons on the University of Maryland staff, including the last three seasons as associate head coach before moving to Temple.
“It's great to be able to bring Brian back to UMBC, and I'm very grateful for his work over the past year,” Adams said. “He will always be a part of the Retriever family and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
The former goaltender holds UMBC's single-season record (11 games in 2002) and career shutout record (25 games). He earned first-team All-Northeast Conference honors during his senior season in 2002. The Toronto native won the team's Ed Fite Award (Top Freshman) in 1999, a share of the Mike Woodard Award (Unsung Hero) in 2001, and was named the team's 2002 Player of the Year. .
He was named UMBC Male Athlete of the Year in 2002-2003 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2014.

Rowland was the head coach at Temple University from 2017 to 2022. Prior to his appointment at Temple University, Rowland spent eight seasons on the University of Maryland men's soccer staff, the last three seasons as the Terps' associate head coach. Under Roland's guidance, Maryland won five consecutive championships in his conference tournament from 2012 to 2016, including the Big Ten as a member of his conference. Including his third consecutive win. Roland was also an excellent recruiter and helped the Terps finish in the top tier year after year.
Prior to serving as associate head coach, Rowland was named recruiting coordinator in 2014 and helped secure the No. 1 rated class in 2015 and the No. 2 class in 2016.
After a successful career at UMBC, Roland played professionally for the USL's Toronto Lynx (2003-2004), the MISL's Baltimore Blast and Milwaukee Wave (2003-2007), and finally in 2007. Until 2007, he played for Crystal Palace USA in the USL. 2009.
Prior to joining UMBC, Rowland played for the Canadian Youth National Under-20 team and had trials with Manchester United and Fulham.
A native of Toronto, Ontario, Roland earned a bachelor's degree in economics from UMBC in 2003. Roland holds his USSF A license (2012) and is involved with US Soccer as a youth national team scout.
