ANDREWS — Andrews High School senior Arlyn Moore is developing her talent in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Moore, a wide receiver and defensive back for the Yellow Jackets, signed a National Letter of Intent to play football and track and field at Methodist University. He celebrated his decision with a ceremony March 26 in the Andrews High School auditorium.
“They welcomed me like family,” he said of the monarchs.
In track and field, Moore runs the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 4×100 meters. In football, he will play primarily as a wide receiver at Methodist, but could also play as a defensive back. He also has experience as a kick returner.
Moore, who also played basketball for the Yellow Jackets, said he learned how to be a leader after moving to Andrews.
“I felt like I could have more of a say,” he said. “The school and coaches have always welcomed me into the family.” [and] All players. I always feel like I'm the leader here. ”
Last fall, Moore led the Yellow Jackets to an 8-4 overall record, second place in Region VIII-2A and a berth in the second round of the playoffs.
“We're very proud of him,” Andrews High School football coach Scott Durham said. “[He’s] He's just a hard-working kid, so it's never a problem. [and] He will do everything you ask him to do. [He’s] Exactly what we want in our student-athletes. ”
Durham is glad Moore will be able to play two sports in college.
“I always tell them, there's only so much time in your life to do something like that, to play multiple sports, to play a sports period,” Durham said. “Eventually everything will pass and you'll just sit back and think about the old days. So while you have the chance, make the most of it and enjoy it.”
During the ceremony, Durham emphasized the importance of academics.
“Academics will either open the door or close the door,” Durham said. “Every time you roll a C, it just closes more doors. Obviously, this is a great example. You're going to get a chance. Hopefully they'll figure it out no matter what. Grades, you're not going.”
