The UFL San Antonio Brahmas open their new season on Easter Sunday inside the Alamodome.
SAN ANTONIO — Spring pro football resumes across the country this weekend, with San Antonio hosting the San Antonio Brahmas of the United Football League.
The Alamo City has been here many times before, as have other football markets, whether they are established NFL cities or not, most recently with the XFL and the Federation of American Football.
“When we do this, let's make sure this is a strong league,” said UFL Director of Operations Darryl Johnston.
The former Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl-winning fullback said his mission is to make sure this is the best professional spring football production in 40 years, referencing the USFL from nearly 40 years ago.
However, the most important question still seems to be “Why does it work this time?”
“We have The Rock and Danny Garcia working with FOX (Network) and Redbird Capital, and we have people promoting it for us,” Johnston said. “It's a different business model right now, but I truly believe this will be the most talented spring league we've seen since the USFL days, which had some of the greatest football players to ever try to go head-to-head with the NFL.” ” he added.
There's no doubt the UFL are thinking big, but Johnston believes they can back it up. “The phone is ringing with an impressive name,” he says. “The players that we communicate with on a daily basis are great. We've finally got the confidence from people that this time it's going to work.”
And if there's one reason the league needs to find a home with both fans and TV viewers, it's this: “The NFL needs us,” he said. “I know everyone thinks we need the NFL, but the NFL needs us,” he continued. “There’s only one focus, one goal, and it’s to make sure you stick with it for the long haul.”
The UFL San Antonio Brahmas open their season on Easter Sunday at 11 a.m. against the DC Defenders.
