SACRAMENTO – NFL Hall of Famer Tim Brown hosted his 23rd youth football camp at Sacramento State, an annual event that is part of a mentorship program for underserved youth.
Tim Brown, affectionately known as Mr. Raider, shares his NFL experience and love of the game with kids who may or may not have the opportunity to participate in sports.
“It was amazing,” Brown said. “This is great. It gives the kids a chance to run around and play instead of catching a soccer ball.”
Some players have already shown their skills, while others are young players who are just entering the game.
Brown's soccer officials and coaches help teach important concepts like responsibility and perseverance.
Discipline, dedication, and teamwork are all important when learning how to be a team player.
“We have to look out for each other and be accountable to our team,” participant Mia Chandler said.
Julius Coffey said, “I haven't played soccer for a while, but it made me realize that I'm still in shape.”
Children come from all backgrounds. Some children are autistic, some children are immigrants.
“This is a newbie program. Some of the kids don't speak English,” said Virginia Coffey.
The chance to get physical, feel good and build confidence is something they take back with them on and off the field.
