COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – For the first time, iconic Kyle Field will host a concert featuring iconic performers. On Tuesday, it was announced that George Strait will perform at the home of the Texas A&M football team on June 15th.
The King of Country played in front of more than 104,000 people at Arlington's AT&T Stadium in 2014.
According to Billboard magazine, the record for most people attending a ticketed concert in the United States was set in 1977 when 107,019 people attended a Grateful Dead show in New Jersey. Texas A&M announced that more than 107,000 tickets will be available for the Straits concert.
Large-scale events are no stranger to the folks at Kyle Field. At Texas A&M, his football games regularly draw crowds of over 100,000 people.
“If you think about it, this is technically like the eighth or ninth game of the season,” said Kindra Frye, assistant athletic director for special events at Texas A&M. “Concerts come with a lot of differences and nuances that are different from games, but at the same time we recruited and talked to all of those people.”
One week before the George Strait concert, Kyle Field will host an international friendly soccer match between Mexico and Brazil.
“It's going to be a really fun two weeks in the life of Kyle Fields because these events are happening back to back, but I think we're all ready,” Frye said.
Frye said he is working to host more non-football events at Kyle Field. She said the announcement of the concert and soccer match will open the eyes of promoters looking to bring events to stadiums.
“There's no other place that compares to this, and I think that's the real draw for all these events to want to come here,” Frye said. “And I think it was only a matter of time before we started hosting events and large-scale events outside of Aggie football at the stadium so that people really started to realize that there is so much more that can be done here.”
