chapel hill, north carolina – UNC football coach Mack Brown mentioned the recent arrests of three football players involved in a fatal January crash in Chapel Hill.
Brown said Monday that Travis Shaw, Zach Rice and Malachy Hamrick will participate in the team's spring training period. The three people charged in connection with the accident will be subject to disciplinary action by the program following legal proceedings.
“We have three men who committed misdemeanors and are currently going through legal proceedings,” Brown said. “We will let the legal process run its course and anything we do after that will obviously result in disciplinary action within our program.”
According to court documents, Rice was closely following another car and his car was speeding 194 mph in a 45 mph zone. The car Rice was following crashed, killing his passenger, Molly Elizabeth Rotunda, 20.
Rice is a sophomore from Lynchburg, Virginia. Shaw is in his junior year at Greensboro College and Hamrick is in his sophomore year at Shelby College.
“We are disappointed every time one of our employees is cited for violating the law,” Brown said.
According to documents, the first car was being driven by 20-year-old UNC student Fremija Brewer, who survived the crash and is facing multiple felony charges. WRAL News reported that street racing may have been a factor in the accident.
UNC's spring game is scheduled for April 20th.
