An honor roll student and football player at North Shore High School, he had plans to pursue his passion at Lamar University before his life was tragically cut short.
HUMBLE, Texas โ It's been a week since Jahvon Coles, an 18-year-old North Shore High School honor student and football player, was shot and killed at a house party in Humble.
Hundreds of people paid their final respects Saturday morning. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Houston Mayor John Whitmire proclaimed March 16 as “Jahvon Coles Day.”
If that love could be crammed into a room, it would burst at the seams for Jarvon. The main sanctuary was filled to capacity with even more visitors filling the auditorium.
Many praised his youth and encouraged others to follow his drive and compassion.
The important thing is not how long you live, but how you live. This was one of many messages shared with Jahvon “Veezy” Coles' family and friends gathered at Light of the World Christian Fellowship Church for his Celebration of Life Service.
A large group of people, including family, pastors, friends, and teammates, paid tribute to his life cut short while honoring his great accomplishments during that time.
“That smile, that leadership, those active people in the community,” said the Rev. Joseph Bailey, whose son played on Jervon's soccer team.
Everyone shared the sadness, but also the joy of knowing Jervon. Because they say that to know Him is to love Him. His dedication to family, education, community and football are all evident through their stories and the large number of participants.
“It was nothing but love that they came to support my son. I don't know what to say,” said Jarvon's father, Jarvis Payne.
Jarvon was supposed to be preparing for prom, graduation, and college, but all those dreams are gone. It's been a week since he was shot and killed because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“I want them to turn themselves in, admit what they did, what they did was wrong, you took an innocent life,” Bailey said.
And while that prayer is for justice, his father has a personal message for those responsible for this family's loss.
“The Bible says you shouldn't fear men, you should fear God. So if anyone knows anything, please come forward,” Payne said.
In addition to recognition from local and state leaders, NFL quarterback and Houston native Jalen Hurts sent a video message to his family. Regarding the investigation, law enforcement authorities are still searching for the person responsible.
