TEMPE, Ariz. — Wednesday marks the pro day for 13 Arizona State University football players, looking to show off their skills in front of NFL scouts ahead of April's draft. This is the culmination of a lifetime of preparation for young people who finally have the opportunity to make an impression and take another step towards realizing their dream of playing football professionally.
One of the participants was Deer Valley High School offensive lineman Joey Ramos, who set a record for most bench presses with 24 reps. Ramos' football journey took him from the All-Fever team on Friday Night Fever to Iowa State and finally back to his hometown. To the valley.
He is currently working toward becoming a pro.
“We've put in countless hours and years to be able to have this moment here and perform in front of all these teams. It's a dream come true,” Ramos said. . “Today my nerves were at an all-time high and my anxiety was high.However, after all the preparations I had made, I think my biggest gain was being able to control my breathing and return to real life.'' Ramos overcame multiple injuries throughout his college career, including a season-ending ankle injury in ASU's 2022 season opener.
The Glendale native felt the versatility he displayed throughout the training was what impressed the scouts the most, and said his family's involvement made the experience even more meaningful.
“I'm so grateful to be a Sun Devil forever. And it's great to be able to do it in my own backyard because my whole family is there and I don't have to worry about it popping out,” Ramos said. “So I was active in all areas, center snaps, long snaps, tackles, guards. I think my biggest attribute is being able to do that right away.”
Ramos wasn't the only company product on display at ASU's pro day. The group also included punter Josh Carlson (Gilbert), defensive back Alphonso Taylor (North Canyon) and long snapper Slater Zellers (Notre Dame Prep). Another standout player was defensive back Roe Torrence, who was the only ASU player invited to the NFL combine in February. Torrence, who will join the Sun Devils in 2022, said he is working on “putting everything together” to make the best impression to NFL scouts.

“Everything I've been training for and everything I've been meaning to work on for the last few months, just putting it all together and releasing it. Getting out on the field and letting it go,” Torrence said. “Honestly, I couldn't sleep. When I came here today, my emotions are all over the place. Tension, anxiety, excitement, it's like everything happened little by little. But once I get out of here and the frustration goes away, I… It felt like a normal day for me.”
A number of ASU players told 12Sports they plan to practice with the Arizona Cardinals in the coming weeks.
The NFL Draft begins April 25th in Detroit.
