I go to school from north Des Moines.
CEDAR RAPIDS – Don't judge him by his win-loss record. Judge Eric Addy by what he was able to accomplish in what may be the toughest job in the state.
That would be a clear cultural change.
Addy was announced late Wednesday afternoon as the new varsity head football coach in Cedar Rapids, Wash., pending school board approval. He is enrolled at his alma mater, Des Moines North, which has one of the highest student populations in Iowa with one of the highest free and reduced lunch rates and one of the highest minority rates.
After five winless seasons, North won four in 2022, the school's most wins since 1999. They won twice last season.
Addy also helped develop a pair of Division I college players, Devin Hilson (Iowa State) and David Kirker (Iowa State). He is North's assistant activities director, weight room coordinator, and school activities academic interventionist.
“Eric has spent the past five seasons at Des Moines North where he was able to revitalize and rebuild the football program,” a press release from Washington said. “His passion for working with student-athletes and creating an engaging environment will allow Coach Addy to continue building on the Warriors' rich football tradition.”
Maurice Blue resigned as Washington's head coach in December after seven seasons. The Warriors went 1-8 last season.
“I am grateful, humbled and excited to have been named the head football coach at Washington High School,” Addy said in a press release. “My family and I can't wait to become a part of the Washington community. .That's always great.'' It's the day you become a warrior. ”
