A promising Texas high school football star was killed Saturday night when gunshots rang out at a house party attended by 50 to 60 people, authorities said.
According to the sheriff's office, on Saturday around 11 p.m., deputies with the Harris County Sheriff's Office responded to a rental home on Fieldwick Lane on a large property in Humble, Texas, due to concerns about underage drinking. It is said that they were called.
The party took place at an Airbnb rental, the sheriff's office said.
Shortly after, the Sheriff's Office received another call about someone on the lawn, KRTK reports.
HCSO said deputies were told by partygoers that a young man was having a seizure in the backyard, KHOU reported. As they performed CPR on the man, they realized he had been shot in the chest, KHOU reported.
The young man, later identified by HCSO as North Shore High School senior Jahvon Coles, 18, was rushed to a local hospital where he died a short time later, authorities said.
HCSO Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter): “One or two gunmen approximately a block away intentionally fired in the direction of the house party, striking a man. I think he did.”
Gonzalez said the gunmen fled the scene in a car and asked residents to check surveillance cameras for clues.
Anyone with information should contact HCSO at 713-274-9100 or @CrimeStopHOU 713-222-TIPS (8477).
Gonzalez said authorities believe the party was promoted on social media.
Coles was well known in the community for his good grades and prowess on the soccer field.
In a September 2023 feature on him, he told KTRK, “School comes before athletics. I have to get my work done in class. Then I get out of here and work hard. I can do that,” he said.

The community is mourning the loss of a talented teenager who was about to begin a new and exciting chapter in his life, his grandfather and guardian told KHOU.
Coles, a two-time first-team all-district linebacker at North Shore High School, had a 4.1 GPA and was accepted to 15 colleges, Braxton Coles told KHOU.
He said his grandson plans to attend Lamar University and play football at the school.
He is survived by his grandparents and several siblings, KHOU reports.
“Parents, please keep your children close. No matter how hard you try, you can't save them,” Braxton Coles told KHOU.
Coles' friend Dameko Williams said she started crying as soon as she heard the news, KHOU reported.
Williams told KHOU that Coles was well-liked, had a good personality and was always looking out for his friends.
“Like I say, he was a great guy on and off the field,” Williams said.
The sheriff said the party took place at an Airbnb, but according to Airbnb, the party did not take place within the time frame of the actual reservation, Fox 26 Houston reported.
