A former college football player accidentally shot and killed his mother over the weekend, thinking she was an intruder trying to break into his Missouri home.
“He wouldn't stop crying,” William Goldstein, the 25-year-old's attorney, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch over the weekend.
Jalen Johnson shot and killed his mother around 7:30 a.m. Thursday, thinking she was an intruder as she tried to break into their Olivet home in suburban St. Louis through the back door, police said.
His lawyer said his son kept a gun in the house for protection after he was robbed at gunpoint.
Olivet Police said Jaylen's mother, Monica McNichols Johnson, 56, died at her home despite life-saving efforts by Johnson's girlfriend.
The son called 911 immediately after the shooting and has been distraught ever since, his attorney said.
Prosecutors charged Johnson with manslaughter and armed criminal action.
His bail was set at $100,000.
Johnson was a college football player, is currently employed, and has no criminal history, according to his lawyers and officials.
