Honolulu – The No. 3 University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team defeated No. 1 Grand Canyon in straight sets on Friday, the second day of the Outrigger Invitational at Simplify Arena in the Stan Sheriff Center. The set scores were 25-17, 25-20, 25-20.
The Rainbow Warriors (16-1) played their best volleyball of the season, handing previously undefeated Grand Canyon (15-2) their losing streak in the tournament. In set one, UH jumped out to an 11-5 lead on an ace from Nusterer. Todd's ace made it 18-9, but Lopez could only get within five points. Hawaii hit .261 with two aces and five blocks in this set.
The Warriors used a 5-1 run to take a 9-7 lead in the second set. Shortly after, UH reeled in his fourth in a row to take a 16-12 advantage. Lopez narrowed the lead to one point, but Hawaii scored three consecutive points, including a solo block by Voss, to make it 21-17.
Nusterer hit back-to-back aces in set three to take a 12-8 lead. Chakas' back-low kill and ace on back-to-back plays gave UH a 16-10 lead and the game was all but decided.
In the opening match of the day, Lewis defeated UCI 22-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-20, 15-11. Daniel Haber had 17 kills for the Flyers (11-9), and Hilil Henno had a match-high 24 kills for the Antiters (13-5).
Sunday's games begin with Grand Canyon vs. Lewis at 2 p.m., followed by Hawaii vs. UC Irvine at 5 p.m.
