Tempe, Arizona – Arizona finished the first day of the Pac-12 South Invitational 1-1, defeating Utah, but suffered its first loss of the season to the 14th-ranked Washington Huskies.
Arizona secured a 3-2 victory in the first game of the day against Utah. Later in the evening, the Wildcats lost 4-1 to the Huskies.
pair hope shannon/grace cook They fell just short in a close three-set match against Utah, winning the first set 21-19, but losing the final two sets 16-21 and 13-15, respectively.
Shannon and Cook battled hard against the Huskies that night, eventually dropping two sets 21-14, 21-18.
abby russell/Olivia McElroy The first match of the season against Utah State's Riley Johnson/Bella Vezzani was a close battle for second place, but they lost 22-20, 19-21, 12-15.
Later that day, the two lost a close three-set match against Washington, falling to 7-2 on the season.
3rd place goes to Arizona pair Kylie Fitzsimmons/Annie Cost They defeated the Utes in two sets, 21-12, 21-12, finishing in fourth place and giving Arizona two wins.
Fitzsimmons and Kost lost to Washington's Scarlett Dahl/Kendall Mather 13-21, 15-21 in the night match.
jess horwath/Kate Phillips The Wildcats won 22-20, 21-19 in a close game against Utah's Marissa Koch/Kylie Pisak to earn the point.incredible defensive play Kate Phillips and jess horwath The first grade pair won.
Later in the day, Phillips and Horwath once again showed their patience, rallying from a 21-17 deficit in the first set to win the second set 25-23, but the pair ultimately won the third set. They lost in a back-and-forth battle in sets. 20-18.
miranda elo/Ashlyn Zilliken performed well in both games. Against No. 5 Utah, the pair defeated the Utes 21-14, 21-15. In the night's game, Zilliken and Elo defeated the Huskies 21-14, 21-19, scoring Arizona's first points of the double.
The Wildcats will play again on Sunday, facing No. 3 USC at 12 p.m. and No. 10 ASU at 4 p.m.
