Tampa, Florida – The Coastal Carolina beach volleyball team narrowly fell short against No. 20 Tampa on the first day of the Tampa Invitational, but earned its first win in program history against Florida Gulf Coast.
Coastal Carolina is now 5-5 on the season.
Match 1: Coastal Carolina 3, FGCU 2
In the first match of the day, Coastal took an early lead. Ellie Hanford and Emma Knauss They won 23-21, 21-17 on Court 1. Maddie Richty and Dennis Morgenstern They then achieved a come-from-behind victory in the fifth flight, winning 16-21, 21-13, and 15-10, giving the Chants a 2-0 lead.
Florida Gulf Coast won on Court 3 and took an early lead on Court 1, but Martin Klagholm and Sarah Riedel They came back to take the third set, overcoming a 10-8 deficit and clinching the match with a 16-21, 21-14, 15-12 win. The win was Coastal's first against the Eagles.
Match 2: No. 20 Tampa 3, Coastal Carolina 2
Coastal fell behind 2-0 against the Spartans, but Kragholm and Riedel led the Chanticleers to the championship with a dominant 21-15, 21-6 Top League victory. The Chants' comeback attempt fell just short as Tampa secured the victory on court three. Julia Blazek and Emma Plutnicki A rally on the second flight closed out the game and won 22-24, 21-18, 15-11.
The Sandy Chants will play Houston Christian at 8 a.m. Saturday and No. 4 Florida State at 12 p.m.
