The Florida State Seminoles are less than a month away from the start of spring practice. The Seminoles had their most successful season in a decade, going 12-0 in the regular season, defeating the Louisville Cardinals in the ACC Championship, and making it to the Orange Bowl (albeit highly controversial). FSU will undergo a major roster overhaul with the departure of more than 20 players listed in the two-deep. In this series, we will review departing players, additions, and spring pick candidates for each position.
First is the quarterback position. The Seminoles have relied heavily on Jordan Travis as their starter the past two seasons. FSU added a big piece in the offseason with the addition of former Clemson Tigers and Oregon State Beavers QB DJ Uiagalelei. This may be the position that attracts the most attention heading into spring practice in 2024.
quarterback
Main starting point:
Jordan Travis (Alumnus)
Tate Roadmaker (transfer)
Main additions:
DJ Uiagalelei (transfer)
Luke Kromenhoek (recruit)
Spring depth:
DJ Uiagalelei, Sr.
Brock Glenn, redshirt freshman
Luke Kromenhoek, freshman
Spring depth chart forecast:
Tim: Easiest of all depth chart predictions, barring disaster this should be DJ's job. Uiagalelei underwent surgery on his non-throwing hand this offseason, but that won't prevent him from leading the offense in the spring. The real competition may be who wins the backup position. Probably Brock Glenn, but there are high hopes for freshman Luke Kromenhoek. My predictions are DJ, Brock, and Luke.
John Roche: Unless the chrome hook looks like the second coming of Trevor Lawrence this spring, the job is DJ by default. We'll see what happens if Brock tries another year, but I think it's a matter of when, not if, he'll be overtaken in the standings. DJ, Luke and Brock.
Nor through and through: If DJU can't be the starter to open the season, FSU is in trouble. Because the only way that will happen is if DJU gets injured. He is an upgrade over his Rodemaker and should be a good bridge to the next era of FSU field generals. The QB competition should really heat up next offseason, but there are no mysteries this offseason. DJU, Brock and Luke K start the season.
Jordan Silversmith: As everyone has already said, the depth chart is expected to start in the spring. The questions come after that. Let's say DJU is struggling midway through the season. Does Mike Norvell feel forced to bench him knowing he only has one year? What if Brock Glenn looks like the quarterback we saw against Georgia in the spring? Will Uiagalelei's seats get warmer? This team is very adaptable from top to bottom, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how the battle unfolds over the next month or so.
