On Sunday, No. 8 girls hockey Pope Francisco lost 2-1 to No. 9 Peabody in the round of 16 of the MIAA Division I state tournament.
Both the Cardinals and Tanners remained scoreless in the first period, unable to make any moves early on. Everything changed when Peabody took a 1-0 lead early in the second period.
Three minutes later, the Cardinals took advantage of a power play to score their first goal of the day, tying the score at one apiece.
The score would remain the same for most of the third period. However, the Tanners were able to score the go-ahead goal with just over six minutes remaining. Peabody relied on strong defense in the remaining games to win 2-1 and advance to the Elite Eight, where they will face No. 1 Notre Dame (Hingham).
Pope Francis finished the season with a record of 14 wins, 8 losses, and 2 draws.
