Round of 16 story
Can Bayern make a comeback?: The first leg was smooth sailing for many regional heavyweights, but Bayern were not among them. Lazio's defeat was sandwiched between games against Bayer Leverkusen and Bochum in the Bundesliga, prompting manager Thomas Tuchel to announce he would step down at the end of the season to stop the bleeding.
Since the announcement two weeks ago, results have been mixed. Bayern won against Leipzig thanks to a brace from Harry Kane, but conceded 11 shots and had fewer shots on target than their opponents, leading to a 2-2 draw with Freiburg on Friday. The six goals in the last three games comes after a brief dry spell for Bayern and less-than-ideal form from Kane, who at one point had zero shots on target in three of five games. This is a strong reaction.
Despite their underdog position, Bayern are the natural favorites when they host Lazio on Tuesday and could be one of several top teams to reach the quarter-finals. But the big question following the German champions is whether they can take it further and finish the season without a trophy for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
Bellingham influence: Real Madrid are in a good position heading into the second leg, but are under some pressure to extend their lead after a narrow 1-0 win against Leipzig last month.
The good news for Los Blancos is the return of Jude Bellingham, who missed the first leg with a minor ankle injury. He returned in Saturday's 2-2 draw against Valencia, but in his absence Real Madrid have relied on a wide range of goalscorers. Vinicius Junior has scored three goals in the team's last five games, while Luka Modric and Brahim Díaz have also pulled the team out of trouble on days when the margins were close. But all eyes will no doubt be on Bellingham again on Wednesday to see if he can continue winning the Champions League following his impressive debut season with Madrid.
