Ireland made history on Friday by clinching their first-ever Test win by defeating Afghanistan by six wickets on the third day of the one-shot match in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. Ireland now record their first win in the format as her fourth fastest team in the 147-year history of Tests.
Australia won the Test in just one match. England, Pakistan and Afghanistan, on the other hand, took two games to accomplish the feat. Meanwhile, West Indies have won six matches, Ireland have won eight matches and India have finished 25 matches.
Ireland played their first Test match in 2018, losing to Pakistan. Afghanistan resumed batting from the second innings on the third day and started at 134/3, but were eventually dismissed for 218. Afghanistan captain Hasmatullah Shahidi (55) and Rahmanullah Gulbaz (46) played important knocks for Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Mark Adair took three wickets and finished the match with eight wickets.
Chasing 111 points, Ireland reached 111/4 points thanks to Andrew Balbirnie (58*)'s unbeaten half-century. Ireland struggled from the start and were reeling at 13/3 as Naveen Zadran dropped Peter Moore and Curtis Campher for a duck.
After the match, Ireland captain Balbirnie said: “It's a well-deserved result. I'm really excited to have won the first Test. There's a lot of cricket played around the world, but 10 to 15 times a year. “I know that I won't be able to take the test,” he said. But then you try to do well and it's very special to be part of a group that was able to do that.”
Speaking at the knock, he said, “I was nervous, but I knew if I could settle in there I could win. It's right there. There's a lot of talk about the relevance of Test cricket at the moment, and it's been going on for years. “I've played cricket in Ireland, a lot of players haven't had the opportunity before, but we hope we can inspire some from our home country to become Test cricketers.” ”
