North Allegheny High School John Ehling Although he was not accepted as a swimmer at Princeton University, he applied anyway and was accepted for the 2023 class.
As a senior, Ehring placed third in the 500 free at the 2019 Pennsylvania AAA High School State Championships with a time of 4:30.16, three seconds off her personal best. But Ehring went unnoticed as she needed 4 minutes, 28.10 seconds to make the second stroke in the 500-meter free final C at that year's Ivy League Championships.
Ehring grew up in a family of competitive athletes. His father was the youngest of three children, all of whom competed in college. They grew up swimming and eventually each fell in love with their sport. Uncle Robert (I know him as Bobby; he is a classmate and friend!) played football at Princeton. Uncle Richard swam at Dartmouth. John's father, Bill Ehring, wrestled at Princeton.
And when he arrived at Princeton, he simultaneously became the new head coach. matt crispino, he decided to join the swimming and diving team. In his first dual meet against Penn and Cornell in November 2019, Ehring swam the 1000 free in 9:48.34, 24 seconds better than his personal best time. Granted, he had only swam this meet three times in his life up to that point, but he had found his sweet spot. At Princeton University's “Big Al” mid-season invitational meet, he broke his own personal records by running 200/500/1000/1650 in the free in all events. That included a 9:33.87 for the 1,000 meters and a 15:42.63 for her first 1,650 meters. Ehring was selected to the 2020 Ivy League Championship traveling team and placed 10th in the 500 meters, ninth in the 1,000 meters, and fifth in the 1,650 meters. His personal bests were 4:23.65, 9:05.42, and 15:14.95, respectively.
Ehring took a year off after the Ivy League canceled the entire 2020-21 season. At the 2022 Ivy League Championships, he finished 6th in the 500 meters (4:21.86), 7th in the 1000 meters (9:02.31), and 6th in the mile (15:08.73).
Last year, he placed 4th, 3rd and 2nd at the same event, posting career bests of 4:18.24, 8:54.78 and 15:00.18. His 1,000 hours of free time broke Princeton University's program record.
Ehring, in her final season, won her first Ivy Championship title Friday night with a time of 8:53.53 in the 1000 free. He won the event by more than two lengths, shaving 1.25 seconds off his own Princeton mark.
Ehring is one of Princeton's captains, but this is an earned honor and not a title given to all seniors. He is known as one of the hardest workers on the team and is perhaps the best walk-on to the Tiger team since his father and uncle were star players in their respective sports over 35 years ago. be.
