New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced plans to introduce a multi-day red-ball cricket competition for women across the country, according to recent reports.
Scheduled to begin immediately after the end of the ongoing Women's Premier League (WPL), which is scheduled to end on March 17, the tournament is scheduled to kick off in Pune on March 29.
According to reports, the tournament will see teams representing six zones – East, West, North, South, Central and Northeast – play five games.
The tournament format will see two quarterfinal matches played simultaneously on March 29, 30, and 31. Following this stage, the championship will advance to the semi-finals, which will be held simultaneously on April 5, 6 and 7. The finals are scheduled for April 9th, 10th, and 11th.
However, the identities of the two teams seeded directly into the semifinals had not been revealed at the time of this report.
The three-day spectacle is expected to be a pivotal assessment of BCCI's ability to stimulate player interest and participation in red-ball cricket events in the country. This initiative reflects the Board's commitment to ensuring that women's cricket receives the same level of attention and importance as men's cricket.
Furthermore, this will instill a culture in which domestic tournaments, such as the proposed red-ball competition, are of equal importance to players as high-profile leagues such as the Indian Premier League (IPL) or international cricket matches. This reflects BCCI's broader objectives.
The introduction of women's red-ball cricket marks a significant milestone in the evolution of women's cricket in India, providing players with a valuable platform to showcase their skills and compete at the highest level in a longer match format . The inaugural tournament is scheduled to be held in Pune and expectations are high as cricket lovers eagerly await the start of this historic event.
