6A quarterfinals
Skyridge 3, Herriman 1
After dropping the first set, Skyridge rallied back to beat top-seeded Herriman 25-27, 28-26, 25-19, 25-22 in the 6A quarterfinals.
“It feels really good,” Skyridge head coach Kaipo Tagaloa said. “I knew my boys were ready and wanted to play hard. We have worked hard the last few weeks to stay aggressive in all aspects of volleyball. We try not to be scared or hesitant. I was very proud of how aggressive they were.”
Frankie Fainga led the Falcons with 24 kills and three aces, and libero Clay Warner had 29 goals.
“They feel great, they look great, they're playing together, there's no hard emotions going on, they're solving problems together,” Tagaloa said.
Lone Peak 3, Mountain Ridge 1
In the first set of the second round of the day, No. 5 Lone Peak lost to Farmington 18-25. After that first set, Lone Peak won six sets but lost just one, including a 3-1 win over No. 4 Mountain Ridge in the 6A quarterfinals.
“The first set of the day is nerve-wracking. It's a big gym with big lights. I think I was nervous at first,” Lone Peak head coach Cecil Reed said. “After that opening set, my fears went away and I started playing Lone Peak volleyball. We played really well, and when we were good, we were great, but when we were a little down, teams took advantage of us.”
The Knights had an even attack with Cade Daly having 10 kills, Brady Holt and Ethan Wright each having nine kills, and Freddie Dayton having eight kills. It was an emotional win for Lone Peak, which advanced to Saturday's 6A semifinals.
“That team had been ranked first all year, and we just never got to play against them,” Reed said. “I knew they were good, but I'd never seen them play, so it was a little bit of an unknown. (Mountain Ridge) has kids that I coached when they were 9 and 10 years old, and they've been playing this game for a long time, so I know how good they are. We just wanted to play Lone Peak volleyball, and we knew if we did it would be really tough to handle.”
Pleasant Grove 3, Bingham 0
No. 3 Pleasant Grove defeated No. 11 Bingham in both regular-season games, including a 3-1 win on May 8. Despite the win, Pleasant Grove head coach Dave Neely knew he couldn't underestimate the Miners.
“We played Bingham at the beginning of the season in March and we played them just last week and they fought hard both times and of course beat Riverton. We knew they had good players, but… We came out and went about our business. We served well, we blocked well, we passed well, we did everything we always try to do, and it showed.”
In the 6A quarterfinals, the Vikings defeated the Miners 25-19, 25-18, 25-22. Pleasant Grove senior Tyson Jarvis led the way with 13 kills, Kennadi Lee had 10 kills and Weston Johansson added nine kills.
After the win, Neely emphasized that advancing to Saturday's 6A semifinals was the group's goal from the beginning of the season.
“We always set goals at the beginning of the season and one of them was certainly to get there on Saturday, but it's exciting to be a part of the Final Four. The 6A field is wild and we're here to win it all. It's a blessing to still be standing because we had a lot of good teams.”
Syracuse 3, Westlake 1
No. 7 Syracuse shocked No. 2 Westlake, which advanced to the 6A semifinals, with a 25-15, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19 win in the 6A quarterfinals.
“We were very consistent and didn't get rattled,” Syracuse head coach Corey Vigil said. “There were some moments where we were consistent, got back to our game plan and just executed. Most teams are bigger than us, so we have to be disciplined. ”
Syracuse's Davis Caldwell had 22 kills and Chase Verrett had 20 kills. The Titans' Caleb Roskelly also had 45 assists in the quarterfinal win. “It’s everyone’s game at the moment.
“I’m just proud of them,” Vigil said. “They came out and executed and did what we asked them to do.”
6A Round 2
Lone Peak 3, Farmington 1
After dropping the first set, No. 5 Lone Peak rallied to defeat No. 12 Farmington 18-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-21. Freddie Dayton led the Knights with 16 kills, Adam Cave also had nine kills, and Cade Daly and Brady Held each had eight kills.
Herriman 3, Lehi 1
Top-seeded Herriman defeated No. 16 Leahy 25-18, 23-25, 25-19, 25-16 in the 6A second round. Mustangs libero Matix Huffman provided defensive support, while middle blocker Henry Southard provided help at the net. Herriman outside hitter Tony Kowalewski also racked up kills to help his team advance to the 6A quarterfinals.
Skyridge 3, Davis 1
In the second round of the 6A tournament, No. 9 Skyridge bounced back from a first-set loss to defeat No. 8 Davis 18-25, 32-30, 25-13, 27-25. Frankie Fainga led the Falcons in kills, blocks and aces, contributing to the victory with 26 kills, six aces and three blocks.
Mountain Ridge 3, American Fork 1
In the 6A second round, No. 4 Mountain Ridge defeated No. 13 American Fork 23-25, 29-27, 30-28, 28-26, with each set being a close two-point difference. Sentinels outside hitters Clark Fowler and Xander Kohlmare stood out in net. Mountain Ridge setter Curtis Fowler also had a great game in the win.
Bingham 3, Riverton 2
The Bingham Miners lost both regular season matchups against the Riverton Silverwolves, but on Thursday, No. 11 Bingham defeated them in the 6A second round, 25-20, 25-21, 22-25, 13-25. They narrowly defeated 6th place Riverton 15-9. . Ethan Peterson of the Miners finished the game with 10 kills and eight blocks. Bingham senior Grady Lynch led the way with 13 kills, and Brody Sidway added 11 kills.
Westlake 3, Weber 1
No. 2 Westlake advanced to the 6A quarterfinals with a 25-16, 23-25, 25-16, 25-17 victory over No. 15 Weber. Tyler Lowry led the Thunder with 14 kills, followed by Kirika Tafa with 12 kills. Westlake setter Keegan Cundiff finished the second round match with 35 assists.
Syracuse 3, Corner Canyon 0
No. 7 Syracuse had little trouble winning against No. 10 Corner Canyon, as the Titans dominated the Chargers 25-14, 25-19, 25-23. Chase Barrett was the Titans' leading scorer with 12 kills, while Davis Caldwell and Gabe Meredith each had six kills. Syracuse's Caleb Roskelly also had 24 assists in the second-round win.
Pleasant Grove 3, Copper Hills 2
No. 3 Pleasant Grove withstood a close five-set battle against No. 14 Copper Hills to win the second round 25-22, 12-25, 19-25, 25-20, 15-10. did. Vikings senior outside hitter Weston Johansson had 15 total kills in the match. Pleasant Grove's Tyson Jarvis and Kennadi Lee also had 12 kills and four aces each.
