Wayne County Schools offered boys volleyball club team play over two spring seasons to learn the basics and see if there was enough interest in the sport.
Fast forward to the upcoming 2024/2025 school year, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) has officially sanctioned boys volleyball, and the efforts of all schools to pursue this new sport will begin with an official season and state tournament. will be rewarded.
Wayne County volleyball coach Sandra Baker said, “Last year we only played a few games and were just trying out and enjoying the opportunity. But our goal this season is to be more competitive and , was to lay the foundation for meeting a full team and schedule in 2025.”
This season, two more area teams participated in the club season. Pulaski and the Southwest. Fortunately, these additions were great in the sense that Wayne County was able to play more games without having to make multiple trips north to places like West Jessamine and Danville Christian.
They had several try-matches scheduled against Pulaski County and Southwestern, and would play either two games each night or just one game each night. “This went very well. Given that we are all very new to the world of men's volleyball, it was beneficial for the players to be on a level playing field of skill and fundamentals,” said Coach Baker. I did.
This year, the team finished with six wins and four losses.
“I am very proud of my teammates and their dedication to the sport of volleyball. Being a club team, they paid for their own uniforms, equipment, and transportation to the games. We took the opportunity to be a part of things and really came together as a group,” Baker said.
“We also received some monetary donations from individuals in the community to ensure our team has what it needs to be successful. We are very grateful to those people.” Baker concluded.
