Gretna tops the preseason rankings for Class A boys and girls soccer.
BOYS
CLASS A (2023 record) | Pvs.
2. Creighton Prep (14-6) | 1
3. Lincoln Southwest (14-4) | 4
4. Papillion-LV South (15-6) | 3
5. Omaha Westside (10-7) | —
6. Omaha South (13-4) | 5
7. Lincoln Southeast (13-4) | 8
8. Millard South (13-4) | 7
9. Omaha Bryan (12-5) | 9
10. Millard North (12-4) | —
Contenders : Columbus, Kearney, Lincoln East, Millard West.
Refresher: Creighton Prep won the state championship with a 2-1 victory against Gretna — an impressive result considering all of the offense firepower for the Dragons. Creighton Prep had some injuries — and a 2-5 record — early in the season, but ended the season with 10 wins in a row for its state-leading 10th state title. Class A was really competitive in 2023 — every team had at least four losses.
Comments: Gretna is the clear No. 1 team to begin the season, led by 2023 state player of the year Michael Stukenholtz, the spectacular Omaha commit who scored three goals and had two assists during the state tournament last season. Creighton Prep may take some time — it had 15 seniors its state title team last season — but should be great again by the postseason.
CLASS B | Pvs.
1. Omaha Skutt (19-1) | 2
5. South Sioux City (14-4) | 5
6. Elkhorn North (11-7) | 7
9. Scotus Central Catholic (13-5) | 6
Contenders: Conestoga, Gretna East, Mount Michael.
Refresher: Omaha Skutt won the state championship with a 3-1 victory against Bennington. That made Skutt the first boys team in NSAA state tourney history to win four state titles in a row. In those four years combined, the Skyhawks’ record is 72-9. Conestoga upset Norris in a shootout in the district final to make the state tournament for the first time in 21 years.
Comments: Skutt will show the overall strength of its program again by trying to win the state championship again after graduating 17 seniors. The Skyhawks are led by Omaha commit Ben Schendt and Creighton commit Cole Essner.
GIRLS
CLASS A | Pvs.
2. Omaha Westside (13-6) | 4
3. Lincoln Southwest (16-3) | 2
4. Millard West (11-5) | 6
5. Omaha Marian (15-4) | 5
6. Lincoln East (15-3) | 3
7. Papillion-La Vista (11-6) | 7
8. Millard North (9-6) | 9
9. Lincoln Pius X (11-6) | 8
Contenders: Bellevue West, Elkhorn South, Millard South.
Refresher: Gretna won the state championship match 5-2 against Lincoln Southwest to become the first team in 20 years to win three consecutive state titles in the highly competitive Class A division. In its 20th season, Lincoln Southwest made the state championship match for the first time. The Silver Hawks became just the 11th program to appear in a Class A girls state final.
Comments: After winning the state championship last season, Gretna’s team got split up for 2024 with the opening of Gretna East. That included former Gretna coach Chace Hutchison — his career record is 42-0 — being assigned to Gretna East. Gretna should still be very good, led by 2023 state player of the year Allison Marshall, the powerful forward who scored 21 goals and passed for seven assists last season.
CLASS B | Pvs
1. Omaha Skutt (15-4) | 1
4. Omaha Duchesne (15-4) | 3
6. Elkhorn North (11-7) | 8
9. Omaha Mercy (14-8) | 4
10. Omaha Concordia (10-7) | 10
Contenders: Elkhorn, Omaha Gross, Lexington, Waverly.
Refresher: Omaha Skutt won the state championship with a 1-0 victory against Norris in a shootout. That made three consecutive state titles for the SkyHawks — and 10 overall. Norris had a 16-match winning streak before losing its final match.
Comments: Gretna East should have a chance to quickly contend for a state championship with several players on the team being on the Gretna squad that went 42-0 over the past two seasons. Norris, led by Boise State signee Kennedy Sullivan, should be great again, too.
