What was supposed to be a fun trip for students from Quebec, Canada, to Indian Shores, Florida ended in the death of an innocent student. He went missing while swimming with teammates in the Gulf of Mexico in the early morning hours, and search and recovery teams immediately responded.

Later the same day, the Pinellas County, Florida, Sheriff's Office confirmed the tragic news that a missing teenage boy had been found dead. All that remains for the family is the ongoing investigation, which uncovers some of the unnoticed events shared by police and witnesses.

On the morning of March 6, 2024, when the incident occurred, William Chan, 17, and several other swim team members participated in the Gulf of Mexico. Just before 9 a.m., he and his teammates were swimming in the sea, but were unable to return to land. Witness Rick Ross expressed concern about his unit's distance from the beach, prompting an adult on the beach to call the unit, USA Today reported.

Ross narrated the incident on Fox 13 News. “She was worried about everyone being so far away, so she waved everyone in… and they all came in. Then she ran up the hill and gave me the address here. I asked. “For what?'' I said. She said, “There's one still in the water.'' However, the coaches claimed they were looking for embankments and other dangerous spots during their investigation. Upon closer inspection, there was obvious turbulence with rip currents, making the rescue operation, which lasted several hours, extremely difficult.

Authorities arrived quickly. Some people tried to help by grabbing surfboards and paddling around. The U.S. Coast Guard, which participated in the rescue effort, said the swimmers were about 200 yards away. Advocate Nicole Grohl cited bad weather during Wednesday's rescue effort, but was unaware of the conditions at the time of the incident.

The search continued for several hours…
PCSO conducted a joint search operation with other local departments. Later in the search, Pinellas Suncoast Fire and Rescue Chief Jeffrey Davidson said one member of the group could be seen in the water, but rough waves and numerous buoys made it difficult to identify the second person. Ta. “They were several hundred yards from shore.” Davidson revealed.

At approximately 5:02 p.m., the boy was found by an underwater search and recovery team and was pronounced dead. However, there are no signs of charges and the investigation is still ongoing.
