Women's red-ball cricket will return to the Indian domestic calendar after four years when the BCCI hosts the Senior Interzone Multi-Day Trophy in Pune from March 28, the board announced on Friday.
The move comes after the Indian women's team returned to Test cricket. The team has played test matches against Australia and England in recent years. Domestic women's red-ball cricket was last held in 2018.
“This is a welcome move by the BCCI. The national team has resumed playing Test cricket and we need the next generation of cricketers to play red-ball cricket at the domestic level,” said former India pacer Amita – Sharma told PTI.
“We also want the Red Ball to be held at the state level as well as the regional level. In the past, we had both events,” she added.
The tournament will be organized by the Maharashtra State Cricket Association and six teams representing East, West, North, South, Central and North East zones will participate.
They will play a five-game series played over three days, one more day than the two-day game in the 2018 season.
The tournament will begin immediately after the ongoing Women's Premier League, which ends on March 17th.
It begins with quarterfinals between East Zone and Northeast Zone, West Zone and Central Zone on March 28th, with the semifinals scheduled for April 3rd.
The finals are scheduled for April 9th.
