The Olympics bring together the world's best athletes, including those who stay hunched over the entire competition.
Field hockey was first introduced as an Olympic sport in 1908 and has undergone many changes over the past century, yet the sport's famous short stick remains.
Why are field hockey sticks so much shorter than ice hockey sticks? We'll explain why.
How long is a field hockey stick?
The International Hockey Federation has set the maximum height of a field hockey stick at 105 cm (41.34 in) and the maximum weight at 737 grams (1.62 lb).
Why are field hockey sticks short?
In the fast game of field hockey, a shorter stick allows for better ball handling and control.
In ice hockey, the shape of the puck keeps it flat on the ice, while a field hockey ball bounces more on the playing field.
An offensive field hockey player may want a shorter stick for better accuracy and control, while a midfield or defensive player may opt for a longer stick for better power and reach.
Field Hockey Stick Parts
A field hockey stick has three components.
The head, also called the grip, is what the player holds onto, and players often cover the head with tape to improve their grip.
The thickest part in the center of the stick is called the splice and runs from the handle to the head.
The head is the hook-shaped end of the stick that the player uses to hit the ball.
Can you hit the ball with either side of the field hockey stick?
Field hockey players may only hit the ball with the flat end of their stick.
