University of Nebraska volleyball head coach John Cook has signed a five-year contract extension with the school. Cook's contract expires Jan. 31, 2029, and the Hall of Fame coach will earn an annual salary of $825,000, making him the highest-paid volleyball coach in the country.
Cook is also due to receive a $70,000 retention bonus on July 1, and the head coach likely already knows what that money will be spent on.
“I am very grateful to Troy and the administration for their support and belief in the Husker volleyball program. When Troy and I discussed my contract, I suggested that rather than offering annual salary increases like some coaches, I would be extremely grateful if the Nebraska Department of Athletics would assist me in purchasing a horse from Central Nebraska that I had my eye on. No. 415 is a once-in-a-lifetime performer born and bred on Erickson's famed Pitzer Ranch. He was purchased as a weaner by Mark Ray and subsequently trained by the Ray family. Troy loved the idea, and although it wasn't specifically written into the contract, the retention bonus was to be used for No. 415. I am honored that Troy supported my idea and it means a lot to me. We are all looking forward to an exciting 2024 season.”
Cook is a four-time All-American and 13-time conference champion (nine Big 12 Conference and four Big 10 Conference), and was inducted into the AVCA Hall of Fame in 2017.
