A longtime water volleyball player sent a letter to the recreation department director detailing her concerns about the potential hijacking of much-needed playing time at The Villages pool.
Dan Howard of Santo Domingo Village moved to Florida's friendliest hometown in 2007 and was scouted by an advanced water volleyball group the same year.
“I played a number of years in Division II until December 2022,” Howard said.
he Currently, I primarily play with my water volleyball group at the Eisenhower Recreation Center from 1 to 3 p.m.
“D1 and D2 have had the advantage of owning one to three time slots at Colony Cottage Recreation Center for many years. I think they will own that time slot at Colony for some time to come.” Howard said.
Recent conversations with Water Volleyball League board members raised concerns that some of these time slots could be hijacked.
“I am extremely concerned that D3, D4, D5 and Basic will take away advantageous 1-3 time slots from other pools,” Howard wrote in a letter to Recreation Director John Lohan. I'm concerned about that,” he said.
In particular, Howard is concerned about volleyball players wanting the 1-3 p.m. slot at Eisenhower.
“As a village resident and long-time water volleyball player, I think this is very unfair. Timeslots 1-3 are the best times of the year to play WVB. “Why does the league have the right to kick us out of advantageous time slots? I want the league to use disadvantageous time slots like 11-1 or 3-5,” he said to Rohan. I wrote it in a letter.
It's a matter of “fairness,” he said.
