Ramiz Raja shares his two cents on why cricketers' performance declines after marriage
(Web Desk) – Many Pakistani cricketers got married recently. There has been a lot of talk among cricket fans about their favorite player's on-field performance after marriage.
Pundits and fans alike have pointed out that players like Shadab Khan, Haris Rauf, Shaheen Afridi and Imam-ul-Haq are not performing as well as they used to.
Former Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ramiz Raja says the blame lies with the star players. The former cricketer said he had “never taken his wife on a cricket tour”. It's easy to argue that a common misconception about Pakistani cricketers is that if a player's performance slumps, it's because of marriage.
But Ramiz insists otherwise. The former cricketer spoke about such common occurrences and said the poor wife is not to blame and the decisions of the players should be scrutinized.
He emphasized that when cricketers travel for matches, they usually bring their families with them. Having to balance family with a mentally and physically demanding career can cause athletes to become distracted and perform poorly.
Ramiz spoke about how he himself has lived a married life during his cricketing career and said that accompanying his wife to such important events would have been a distraction. Ta. “Even she (my wife) would have suffered. Now I have a commentary job so there's no pressure, but I still have to wake up early and be out all day. And come back in the evening. And I don't know if I'm going to get into mood swings,” he explained.
“There’s a lot of pressure when you’re playing cricket… you drop two catches, you lose the match, you go back home to change your kid’s nappy, then you put your kid in a stroller and you go to McDonald’s, and your wife will want to buy a sweater” on the way. Now tell me, how are you feeling? Ramiz posed.
The former cricketer suggested that instead of bringing their families with them during the tournament, players should extend their stay and spend time with their families afterwards. He suggested, “You can take a week off after the tour and spend as much lovey-dovey time as you want.''
