Indiana State football head coach Curt Cignetti hinted at possible additions to the secondary after the spring, and the Hoosiers landed a big one on Saturday.
Former James Madison University cornerback D'Angelo Pons, named All-American Freshman of the Year by On3 last year, has announced his commitment to the Hoosiers. Via Xformerly known as Twitter.
The 5-foot-9, 165-pound Pons appeared in 13 games last season, recording 51 tackles, two lost tackles, one interception and 15 passes defensed.
He was reportedly targeted 66 times but allowed just 30 receptions for 259 yards and three touchdowns. pro football focus. Of his 715 snaps, 628 were at outside corners, providing insight into his potential role in the fall.
In Bloomington, Pons will be reunited with Cignetti and defensive coordinator Bryant Haynes, who was scouted by James Madison and coached in 2023.
Pons, a native of West Park, Fla., was named second-team All-Sun Belt Conference and a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America and College Football Network.
Indiana's defense needed reinforcements at the back end. Lost starting cornerback Koby Minor. Pons, who entered the transfer portal on April 29 and had a stellar freshman season with the Dukes, will be a quality addition to Bloomington over the next three years.
