Before coming to USC two years ago, former Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams played for the Oklahoma Sooners under then-coach Lincoln Riley. Williams has shined since taking over the starting job in college, but it wasn't always that way.
As a freshman, Williams was originally a backup quarterback to Spencer Rattler of the Oklahoma Sooners. During a conversation on the popular show “The Pivot,” he finally opened up about how he felt like Williams had passed him, even though he felt he was a better player than him.
“I was so angry, so frustrated. That wasn't what I wanted to hear because I didn't feel that way. Like I felt like I was the best and I was able to help win every game. I felt it,” Williams said.
Rattler was projected to be the No. 1 overall pick when he ultimately comes out of college, giving the Sooners room for a strong quarterback. Although Williams earned the starting spot, he believed Rattler was being given preferential treatment by the program.
“Before I got there, I told everyone I was going to start and beat him,” Williams said. “I thought I beat him in the spring, but he was Project No. 1 and everything else, and he started six games, so I prepared and continued to prepare. ”
A few games into the season, Rattler finally benched Williams and showed what he was capable of with the No. 1 overall pick. He helped the Sooners pull off an incredible comeback against the University of Texas and has been the starter ever since.
Williams has always believed in his abilities, which has helped him get to where he is today. Even against the Trojans, he showed tremendous belief, which should bode well in the NFL.
