Fremont's women's basketball program added prestigious hardware to an already historic season Tuesday night.
The Packers fought off a hard-fought game against Ludington and won 42-38 at home, clinching their first outright conference championship since 1978 in the process. Fremont shared the league championship with Big Rapids in 2020, but this year's team topped the Western Michigan Conference Lakes Division with a 12-0 record and defeated the Orioles, who won five league championships in the regular season. He improved his performance by sweeping.
“I told the girls from day one that the conference championship was going to go through Ludington,” Fremont head coach Pete Zerfas said. “They have won five in a row and I have the utmost respect for Coach (Warren) Stowe and the program he runs.”
Fremont led 17-12 at halftime, but Ludington rallied to take a 27-26 lead entering the fourth quarter. Both teams battled for dominance for most of the final slot, but the Packers took the lead with two minutes left in regulation time and held off the Orioles from there to secure an important league victory.
Riley Chase paced Fremont with 13 points, including 11 in the second half, and Jessica Bennett added 10 points, including seven in the fourth quarter. Taylor DeKuiper had seven points and 10 rebounds, Mia Clemens had five points, eight rebounds and four assists, and Katie Ackerman had five assists.
Fremont (17-4, 12-0 WMC Lakes) will travel to Fruitport (5-16) on Thursday to close out the regular season, while Ludington is 15-7 overall and 10-2 in league play. The regular season ends with a loss.
