The Board of Control for Cricket in India plans to conduct a senior inter-zonal red-ball tournament to revive women's red-ball cricket.
The tournament will be held in Pune from March 28th.
The move comes after the Indian women's team returned to Test cricket. The team has played test matches against Australia and England in recent years. Domestic women's red-ball cricket was last held in 2018.
The tournament will be organized by the Maharashtra Cricket Association and will feature six teams representing East, West, North, South, Central and North East zones.
They will play a five-game series played over three days, one more day than the two-day game in the 2018 season.
The tournament will begin immediately after the ongoing Women's Premier League, which ends on March 17th.
The tournament will begin with the quarterfinals between East Zone and Northeast Zone, West Zone and Central Zone on March 28th, with the semifinals scheduled for April 3rd and the finals on April 9th.
It is a good decision by the BCCI to capitalize on the hype generated by the recent success of the Indian women's team in the Women's Premier League (WPL) and red-ball cricket.
The tournament means more young players will get the chance to play red-ball cricket apart from the white-ball matches played throughout the year.
