App State student, football player dies
Today's show begins in the wake of a tragic situation in Charlotte. Eight law enforcement officers were shot and killed there yesterday. Four of these police officers were killed. The remaining four are recovering. The dead included three officers with the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and one officer, Charlotte Mecklenburg. The two U.S. Marshals were identified as Sam Pelosi and Aldon Elliott. Both men are 14-year veterans of the Jones Adult Correctional Service and have been identified as Joshua Eyre, who served in the North Tyrone Division of Constabulary. It's also a dead police officer. Charlotte's police chief said the shooting was a tragic day for the city and law enforcement. They knew there was a police officer in need of help and they needed to get him out of the area, only to end up getting shot themselves. So show us that courage, heroism and everything that goes with it is what defines our profession. Our employee tweeted today that our own Maria DeBone is following this story for us. She has been living in Charlotte since morning. Maria, what do we know at this hour? Audrey, I live here at police headquarters in Charlotte, where a memorial service has begun. This is the front step. There are only a few bouquets of flowers here now. Well, this all started yesterday afternoon when members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force said they were attempting to execute a warrant at a home on Galloway Drive and the east side of the city. As Marshall approached, the suspect, now identified as 39-year-old Terry Clark, opened fire on them, killing Hughes, authorities said. The task force then requested assistance from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. After the standoff, our team spoke with neighbors who live nearby who said they still couldn't believe what they saw. It is alive. They were cops, sheriffs, and state troopers flying down the highway, giving her directions as close to her home. Will definitely register differently. But it's still sad. I feel sorry for all the families and law enforcement officers, but at the end of the day, something has to change. And we also know that police are questioning two people who investigators say were inside the house. They have not released their names or said whether any charges will be filed against them. Charlotte resident Maria DeVaughn WXII 12 News. Thank you, Maria. Live Updates Several Triad law enforcement agencies are offering their condolences. The Greensboro Police Department posted a message on Apex asking for peace of mind for those who lost their lives in the line of duty to uphold the laws of our great land. We have that watch. And of course, this is a developing story. I will continue to follow you. We will provide you with the latest information through newscasts. We will also bring you new information as it becomes available.
