Karen DeBoer was right. The spring transfer portal window may be closed, but Alabama football is reportedly still adding talent to positions of need.
According to 247 Sports, the Crimson Tide will likely acquire defensive back Dashawn Jones from Wake Forest. Jones was a starter for the Demon Deacons the past two seasons.
“We have students who are making visits or arranging for them to come to campus,” DeBoer said Thursday. “So, ultimately, I think we feel good about the direction we're going in, improving the roster, improving the roster. That's what it is.
Jones made two 3-3s at cornerback for Wake Forest last season. He spent his three seasons in Winston-Salem before entering the portal during the spring period.
Alabama lost several players after Nick Saban retired, and the NFL Draft and transfer portal decimated their defensive backs group. DeBoer pointed to that group as a position the Tide could look to increase numbers during the spring.
Jones spent three seasons at Wake Forest, adding experience to a young group. Last season, he had 37 total tackles and broke up two passes.
He becomes Alabama's second transfer portal cornerback from North Carolina. The Crimson Tide also added former Charlotte corner Kameron Howard during the spring.
Jones had visited Alabama before the report. He posted two photos on social media from Tuscaloosa, the most recent of which was on Sunday.
Spring portal entry slots closed after May 1st. Players already in the portal can still sign with new schools.
