Del McGee, a Georgia native with 22 years of coaching experience, was introduced as Georgia State University's fourth head football coach during a press conference Monday morning at Center Park Stadium. Joined by his wife Linda, Maggie was introduced by Georgia State University President Dr. M. Brian Blake and Director of Athletics Charlie Cobb. “It's a great day for the university and the football program,” Cobb said. “When you walk into this building, you will see a sign that describes the three core values of our athletic program: compete with purpose, be selfless, and be positive. Being a leader. That's what I've been coming back to in this process, and I think that's what Dell McGee is all about. He's a winner, he's a leader. McGee, a native of Columbus, Ga., comes to Georgia State after spending the past eight seasons on the University of Georgia's staff. The coach and recruiter was instrumental in the Bulldogs' remarkable success under Kirby Smart, highlighted by back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022. He previously coached at Georgia Southern University and was the head coach at Carver Columbus High School for seven years. “We're going to do a great job recruiting great student-athletes with character who believe in hard work and have a vision for the future to always be competitive,” McGee said. “I've been coaching for over 21 years, so I'm used to this state.” Atlanta is the best city in the nation, and the city and state have great high school programs. ” he continued. “I still believe that high school is the way to go. I'm all about development. We use the portal to replenish our roster, but also for high school recruiting. We're going to step up. There's a lot of talent that's being overlooked. This state is one of the top states in producing NFL football players per capita, so we're recruiting hard. So we're going to… We need to make sure we find the right diamonds in the rough and develop those players. “Right before the press conference, McGee met with the team for the first time.'' I told them, “We're going to get this diamond.'' I said I was going to. Put the right coaches in place to make them a better version and compete for championships. And they were so ecstatic. You can see that they are passionate about their work. McGee said the Panthers will resume spring practice after college spring break, the week of March 11th.
