President Joe Biden was emotional Monday as he recognized the Army football team as winners of the Commander-in-Chief Trophy during a ceremony at the White House.
“You should be very proud,” the president said. “And I want you to know that I'm proud of you, too, not just for the victory. Because after you put on that uniform, you immediately put on another uniform. It's about the United States of America. Because it represents.”
President Biden said he wanted to keep his remarks short because he is scheduled to deliver a commencement address to the Class of 2024 at West Point Commencement later this month.

Shortly after noon, the president began his speech in the East Wing by noting that the West Point graduates in the audience had “big smiles on their faces.” The audience included Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. Secretary of the Army Christine Worms. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff CQ Brown. and Reps. Pat Ryan, Steve Womack, Brett Guthrie, and Sanford Bishop. West Point was represented by Superintendent Lt. Gen. Steve Gilland. Commander Maj. Gen. Lori Robinson. Dean Brig.-Gen. General Shane Reeves. and especially athletic director Mike Badi.
“Defeat the Navy!” Congressman Ryan told the president, drawing applause from the audience. Ryan served in the U.S. Army as a military intelligence officer and currently represents the Mid-Hudson majority in Congress.
Army struggled to 6-6 for the second straight season and once again missed out on postseason action, but the Black Knights defeated Air Force (23-3) and Navy (17-11) to win the CIC Trophy. Successful. In 1972 he began a competition between his three service academy football programs.
Since Jeff Monken took over as head coach in 2014, Army has won the CIC Trophy four times.
“People here know that over the last few seasons, the coach has restarted the tradition of old Army football,” the president said. “Whenever the team takes the field, we carry a gold and black flag with a skull and crossbones on it. This flag represents the toughness, tenacity, camaraderie, and responsibility that the Black Knights represent. It stands for everything. And you all certainly demonstrated that, Coach.”
“Winning the Commander in Chief Trophy is a source of pride for our program, storied institution and the Long Gray Line,” Monken said. “Our team was thrilled to officially accept college football's most coveted award from President Biden.”
Army Senior Co-Captain Jimmy Ciaro, who recently signed with the New York Jets as a rookie camp free agent, was called to the podium and presented with a commemorative jersey number 46 by the president (Biden is the 46th president of the United States). ). This jersey represents the 3rd Infantry Division that fought in the Iraq War and was also used in Army-Navy games. There was a patch with the name “Biden.”

“It's always an honor to be invited to the White House,” Buddy said. “Especially for the Commander in Chief Trophy celebration. This is a very difficult trophy to earn and the cadets will never forget being here today.”
West Point will host the trophy until Air Force or Navy wins the title. If the three-way tie ends in a draw, the prize money remains with the reigning champion. The 2024 series depicts the Navy's visit to the Air Force on October 5th. Army hosts Air Force on Nov. 2. Then, on December 14th, Army and Navy faced off in Landover, Maryland, home of the NFL's Washington Commanders.
Air Force has 21 titles (last in 2022), Navy has 16 (last in 2019) and Army has 10. The Black Knights have won in 1972, 1977, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1996, 2017, 2018, 2020, and 2023. He visited the White House and President Donald Trump in 2019, but his 2021 trip was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
