A former Ohio State University football defensive back was charged Wednesday with armed robbery of a Columbus bank, according to Franklin County District Court records.
Marcus Williamson, 25, is suspected of robbing the First Merchants Bank branch at 5090 North High Street in the city's Sharon Heights neighborhood around 10:40 a.m., Columbus police said. has been indicted for.
Police allege in an affidavit filed in Franklin County Municipal Court that Williamson approached a bank teller and handed her a note demanding money. Court records say the note indicated Williamson was in possession of a firearm.
The teller complied with Williamson's demand letter and gave him an undisclosed amount. Williamson then left the bank on foot in a blue Jeep Compass, court records state.
According to court records, officers saw Williamson commit the robbery and flee the scene of the robbery, and immediately arrested him. Records show Williamson had cash from the bank in his possession when police arrested him.
Williamson is scheduled to make his first court appearance Friday morning, according to court records.
Williamson, a Westerville native, played as a defensive back for the Ohio State Buckeyes football team from 2017 to 2021, recording 68 tackles in 46 games.
Wednesday's arrest is not Williamson's first run-in with the law during his playing career.
In 2022, a man was arrested in Shelby County, Tennessee, for carjacking a woman and forcing her to withdraw money from an ATM at gunpoint. He was charged with two counts of aggravated robbery, one count of aggravated kidnapping and one count of tampering with evidence. The outcome of the case was not immediately known late Thursday afternoon.
